THE knife maniac who allegedly stabbed the Mayor of Gdansk to death in front of thousands of people had an "ultra-violent" past.

Stefan Wilmont, 27, is accused of lunging at mayor Pawel Adamowicz with a blade on the stage of a fundraising concert at around 8pm local time on Sunday.

While Adamowicz was filmed grabbing his heart and stomach, the ex-convict from Gdansk shouted: "I was jailed but innocent.

"Civic Platform tortured me. That's why Adamowicz just died," as he waved a five-inch knife in front of a huge crowd.

A party guy turned bank robber

Police said he was released from prison last year, after serving five and a half years for four counts of armed robbery.

Behind bars he was described as a "madman" who was put under "constant medical control" because of his alleged schizophrenia, officials have claimed.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Jaroslaw Zielinski, said the killer had psychiatric problems and called him a "madman."

Zielinski told local media: ”According to what Gdansk police told me today, it appears that he had some psychiatric disorders.”

He turned to stealing after he ran out of money, having spent years enjoying the high life of fancy restaurants, travelling and gambling.

While carrying out his bank raids, the unemployed thug intimidated bank staff with gas guns and replica blank firing pistols.

It is believed that he used a media pass to gain access to the stage during a fundraising event organised by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.

Adamowicz, who died of injuries to his heart, and cuts to his diaphragm and abdomen, was a member of the political centrist party Wilmont mentioned.

Wilmont has allegedly been charged with attempted murder and is set to undergo a mental health assessment.

Poland's justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro said lawyers are assessing whether his sentence for his string of bank robberies was long enough, according to reports.

Thousands of people gathered in Polish cities to mourn the death of Adamowicz, who had been mayor of Gdansk for 20 years and espoused liberal causes including giving refuge to migrants at odds with Poland's conservative nationalist government.

The 53-year-old is said to have undergone five hours of surgery before he passed away.

Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski told reporters "we couldn't win", after doctors had operated on Adamowicz for five hours, the state news agency PAP said.

Polish officials said the day of Adamowicz's funeral would be a national day of mourning.

Adamowicz was one of Poland's longest-serving mayors, holding his position in Gdansk since 1998.
