The internet was left disgusted after a Reddit user revealed in a viral post why a greasy microwave's lights were blinking.
In a post shared to Reddit's 2.7 million-strong r/Wellthatsucks, a community dedicated to things that drag people down, user u/SatynMalanaphy revealed an experience in a friend's kitchen that was sickening.
The post titled "tried to use the microwave at a friend's place, and saw the numbers blinking so took a closer look," teased a hint of the gross revelation that would come.
In the video, a cockroach crawled across the front of the microwave, that was caked in hardened grease and looked as if it had never been cleaned.
But it becomes clear the whole machine is riddled with roaches, with dozens being seen moving across the microwave's green lights.
The post, shared on Tuesday, has been upvoted 27,800 times and attracted some 1,480 comments.
Reddit users raced to the comment section after they saw the stomach-churning clip and had some suggestions about what the poster should do next.
One user said: "Leave. Leave naked. Leave behind all the clothes and shoes and belongings you brought with you."
Another brought up the molten lava death of a cinema icon as a way to rid themselves of the insects: "Seriously, they need to throw that microwave in the spot where the Terminator died in T2."
A third simply commented: "Light that house on fire."
When asked what the rest of the home was like, SatynMalanaphy said he was shocked by how much cleaner it was.
He added: "Surprisingly, much better. The kitchen is the shared space while both guys have separate rooms. He said he picked up the microwave from a hock shop…In the trash it goes."
According to pest control company Terminix, the three most common types of cockroaches are the German, Oriental and American kinds.
While they are attracted for different reasons, they all enter the home in search of food and water.
To prevent an infestation it recommends daily cleaning and reducing cockroaches' access to food by keeping perishables securely stored.
But those with a cockroach problem should learn what areas are attracting the roaches by using glue traps, including behind the refrigerator, under the sink and in gaps near shelves and cabinets.
Once problem spaces are found, use caulk to close the gaps to prevent cockroaches from getting into the home.
Terminix adds: "Gel bait can be an effective roach killer. Gel bait usually comes in the form of a tube and can be applied under baseboards, in cracks and crevices, and near areas that are most likely to attract roaches."
The company recommends regular cleaning of homes to keep cockroaches away and to call a pest management professional if the problem persists.
