On July 1, 1977, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Tyler was conceived as Liv Rundgren.
She is the sole child of Steven Tyler, the lead vocalist of Aerosmith, and Bebe Buell, a model, singer, and former Playboy Playmate (Miss November 1974).
After viewing Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann on the cover of TV Guide’s March 5, 1977 issue, her mother decided to name her after Ullmann.

Before moving back to New York City with her mother at age 12, Tyler attended the Congressional Schools of Virginia, Breakwater School, and Waynflete School in Portland, Maine.
She attended junior high and high school at York Preparatory in New York City after her mother looked into the school to accommodate Tyler’s ADHD.
She also went to Santa Monica, California’s Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences. She left York after receiving her diploma in 1995 to pursue a career in acting.

She made her feature film debut in the suspenseful psychological drama “Silent Fall” in 1994.
Tyler played pivotal roles in the 1995 movies “Empire Records” and “Heavy” after making her acting debut. But the following year, she got her big break when she played Lucy Harmon in Bernardo Bertolucci’s indie thriller “Stealing Beauty.” Tyler appeared in the Tom Hanks comedy “That Thing You Do!” about a fictitious rock band that had one hit that year as well. The actress then appeared in the coming-of-age movie “Inventing the Abbotts,” which also starred Jennifer Connelly and Joaquin Phoenix.
