Electronic engineer Cheng Chen, 27, laboriously researched the armour online before embarking on building the 2-metre tall plastic costume.

The impressive final product comes fit with a helmet, mask, and LED laser gloves, along with the trademark power backpack.

Sadly, when the time came to try it on, Cheng, who comes from Jiangsu province, found he was too short and corpulent to fit inside, reports The People's Daily Online

Cheng was inspired to build the costume after watching Iron Man 3 last year with his younger brother.

'Because I have always been single, I have a lot of time in my hands. The idea of constructing an Iron Man armour then came to mind', he said.

'I love the movie. Even my brother, now in Year 6, loves it. My initial idea was to make one for my little brother.'

Cheng studied images of the superhero and consulted with other Iron Man fans, before collecting online data used to build the suit.

He used ethylene-vinyl acetate - a type of plastic - instead of metal, as a means of reducing the cost and ensuring the suit was manoeuvrable.

He then cut the armour into 13 parts, including helmet, mask, chest and limb protectors, which he later coated with red and gold metallic paint.

When Cheng failed to fit into the suit he enlisted his taller cousin for the job, but he too failed to get inside the costume

When Cheng failed to fit into the suit he enlisted his taller nephew for the job, but he too failed to get inside the costume and could only wear it sitting down.

The 27-year-old now hopes to find a model who can wear his ill-fitting suit.

Ironically, the Iron Man films are about an industrialist who builds a powerful armoured suit to become a superhero.

The only difference is that Robert Downey Jnr worked on a fitness regime, too.
