A student was shot and killed outside a high school in Providence, Rhode Island, on Wednesday. The unidentified male 15-year-old student was shot outside the Providence Career and Technical Academy before 2 p.m. local time, the Providence Journal reported. The student was first reported to be in critical condition but later died from his injuries, according to NECN.
The shooting reportedly stemmed from a fight, according to WPRI.
The high school, which provides both academic education and technical training, was in only its second day of classes on Wednesday when the shooting occurred outside. The teenager who was killed was identified as a student at a nearby school, but it was unclear which school, according to WJAR-TV. Other high schools including Classical High School and Central High School, are also located in the area.
"Some mom and dad is going to go to sleep tonight without their son," said Governor Gina Raimondo. "That puts a pit in your stomach, and our job is not done until all kids are safe and all teachers are safe and these schools are safe."
Authorities took a person of interest into custody a few hours after the shooting, the Journal reported. The names of the person of interest and the victim had not been released.
Another teenage boy was shot a mile away from the school on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Journal. The boy sustained what authorities believed to be non-life threatening injuries. It was unclear whether the shootings were connected.
In late August, Raimondo issued an executive action banning all firearms, except those carried by police officers, on school property in Rhode Island.
"There is no place for weapons of any kind to be kept within our schools other than in the possession of trained law enforcement officials," Providence's commissioner of public safety Steven M. Pare said at the time."
